Maxsyn NEA4 transforms Gippsland dairy pastures

A commitment to improving pasture quality has seen Gippsland dairy farmer Clancy achieve impressive results with Barenbrug’s Maxsyn NEA4 ryegrass, transforming the productivity and resilience of his farm.

Clancy, who has been using Maxsyn for the past two to three years, has over sown the majority of his dairy country with the variety, citing its excellent plant population, fine leaf quality, and palatability as standout features.

“The cows graze it down really well,” Clancy says. “The persistence of the diploids has been a game changer for us. We’ve used a lot of Barenbrug products, and Maxsyn is definitely one of the most palatable grasses we’ve had.”

The farm’s resilience has also been put to the test, with much of the property going underwater last year. Clancy notes that Maxsyn outperformed other varieties, including tetraploids, in terms of persistence under these challenging conditions.

“We switched to Maxsyn two years ago and have kept it as the base across the whole farm because of its reliability, especially with the risk of flooding,” he explains.

Currently, around 80% of Clancy’s farm consists of improved pastures, with Maxsyn playing a significant role. This shift has not only improved pasture quality but also reduced the need for annual re-sowing, saving time and resources.

“We used to rely on annuals and biannuals, which meant spraying out and re-sowing every year. With Maxsyn, we’ve been able to establish a more sustainable system, just oversowing as needed,” Clancy says. “Even on our dryland country, we’ve seen the benefits of this approach.”

Looking ahead, Clancy is optimistic about the long-term benefits of Maxsyn, confident that its persistence and quality will continue to deliver strong returns.
