Elite Ryegrass boosts lamb growth and sustainability in western Victoria
For over 50 years, Charlie de Fegley has been running a prime lamb operation in Ararat, Western Victoria, producing 16,000 lambs annually from 11,000 ewes.
With a focus on efficiency, Charlie has integrated Elite Perennial Ryegrasses into his perennial-based pastures of Phalaris and sub clovers, achieving remarkable results.
“In the last 10 years, our lamb growth rates have increased from 250g to 450g per day, allowing us to turn lambs off the property at just 100 to 110 days old,” Charlie explains. “This has significantly improved our efficiency, productivity, and profitability.”
Charlie’s operation also incorporates EID tags to track pasture performance and genetics, providing invaluable insights. “If you measure it, you can manage it,” he says.
Additionally, a recent analysis with Melbourne University and the Department of Agriculture revealed that Charlie’s perennial-based system delivers a carbon intensity below the industry average, positioning his operation as a low-emitter while delivering premium lamb to market.
“Top genetics need to be matched with top pasture genetics,” Charlie advises. “The combination will pay dividends for years to come.”
